Prerequisite
18.701 Algebra I
Text
Artin, M. Algebra. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1991. ISBN: 0130047635.
Course Requirements
The readings section contains suggested exercises. Weekly problem sets will be handed out separately, and these will be graded. The weekly problem sets contain some more extensive and/or difficult problems, and they are an essential part of the course. The problem sets will require hard work.
Preparation
As known from 18.701, problem sets require serious thought. Students are encouraged to work in groups on these problem sets. However, each of them must write up the solutions alone. Solutions to the exercises will be posted for the students. We may also schedule informal sessions to go over homework as needed.
Homework
You will not be able to complete the homework in one sitting. I recommend that you get together with other students to work on these assignments. However, consulting solutions from previous years' problem sets is not permitted, and the solutions that you hand in must be written entirely by you.
Exams
There will be three quizzes during class hours. There will be no final examination.
