CORE Lead Universities Meeting (Liu Rui reports)

On August 16, representatives from the 12 CORE Lead Universities met at Beijing Jiaotong University.

The mission of the 12 Lead Universities is to carry out pilot programs for CORE and to set up examples for other Chinese universities. The 12 CORE Lead Universities are selected based on two principles: 1. the select universities are leading universities in China so that they have adequate resources to accomplish the mission; 2. the select universities are geographically balanced so that they can reach out to cover a large area as well as a broad range of audience in China.

On the meeting, 4 universities (Dalian University of Technology, Central South University, Sichuan University and Beijing Jiaotong University) presented their CORE-OCW proposals.
Mr. Zhao Jiangtao from Dalian University of Technology said that currently 6 of DUT's own courses already used OCW materials. DUT has been actively promoting bilingual (Chinese/English) teaching and most of its faculty have studied abroad. DUT plans to translate OCW courses with CORE and to establish an online course resource center by August 2007.
Mr. Chen Qiyuan, Vice President of Central South University pointed out that CSU would not only translate OCW courses but also make CSU's own coursewares openly available through CORE. OCW will be integrated into CSU's educational reform plan. Each course that uses OCW will have a professor designated to promote the utilization of OCW among both faculty and students.
Mr. Du Yongping, Deputy Director of Academic Affairs of Beijing Jiaotong University added that BJTU planned to use OCW as a reference to revise its own undergraduate syllabuses. BJTU will also combine OCW implementation with the development of High-Quality Course Project of the Ministry of Education.
Dr. Fun-Den Wang and CORE then introduced about the progress of the OCW localization initiative and CORE's official website. CORE is committed to providing high quality and standards-setting translation of OCW. Together with CORE's MIT OCW mirror site, both the original and the translated OCW resources will be openly and freely available on CORE's website. CORE's official website will be launched on September 1st, when the 2nd International OpenCourseWare Forum in Shanghai starts. The CORE website is intended to serving as a platform for open sharing and exchange of global educational information and resources.
CORE thanked the 12 universities for attending the meeting and looked forward to seeing each other again very soon in Shanghai.
