Overview of the 2004 MIT and CORE OCW Conference

The 2004 MIT & CORE OCW Conference was held in Shanghai on the 2nd and 3rd of September 2004. It was the second conference for MIT and CORE following the successful first event hosted by BeijingJiaotongUniversity in September 2003.

This conference was sponsored by China Open Resources for Education (CORE) and cosponsored by one of the CORE Lead Universities, ShanghaiJiaotongUniversity. As the sponsor of this conference,CORE hopes that quality of Chinese higher education will be greatly enhanced by receiving excellent open courseware (OCW), utilizing advanced technology and teaching methodology from MIT and other internationally recognized universities, and practicing them in China. At the same time, CORE also hopes that more and more unique Chinese educational resources, including Chinese language and culture and the other high quality coureswares would be introduced into the developing educational network for sharing with other countries and for serving Chinese education.

¡¡¡¡At 3:00-5:00pm on Sept.1, the day before the main conference, the first Executive/Advisory Board meeting was held in ShanghaiJiaotongUniversity. Dr. Marshall Smith and Dr. Cathy Casserly, representatives from the Hewlett Foundation; Dr. Dick Yue, Associate Dean of the School of Engineering at MIT;Dr. Victor Zue, MIT; Ms. Hua Shao, Chairman of the Photography Association of China; Prof. Binglin Zhong, President of Beijing Normal University; Prof. Zhenhui Tan, President of Beijing Jiaotong University; Prof. Xin Wei, CEO of Beida Fangzheng Group; Prof. Quyuan Ye, Vice President of Shanghai Jiaotong University; Prof. Kerang Zhao, Vice President of China University of Geoscience;Prof. Bing Yan, Vice President of Central Radio and TV University, andMs. Yin Wen, Chairwoman of China International Federation of Charities attended the Board meeting. Some member universities, such as TsinghuaUniversity, BeijingUniversity, NankaiUniversity, Xi¡¯an Jiaotong University, Beijing University of Science and Technology, International Business and EconomicUniversity, sent their representatives to the Board meeting. The Chairman of CORE, Dr. Fun-Den Wang and CORE¡¯s other staff reported to board members about CORE¡¯s five-year plan and its implementation strategy. Board members and representatives listened to the report carefully, then discussed the important topics more. They put forward some helpful suggestions and advice for the development of CORE. The CORE Executive Board, mainly composed of presidents of Universities, also showed great warmth and support for CORE¡¯s future development. CORE will solicit the advice of board members and make appropriate revisions in response to that advice. After getting the approval of the two boards, CORE will implement its business plan.

¡¡¡¡At 9:00 am of Sept. 2, 2004, 2004 MIT & CORE OCW Conference was held the first conference room of HaoranHigh-techBuilding at ShanghaiJiaotongUniversity. Prof. Shengwu Xie, President of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Dr. Fun-Den Wang, Chairman of CORE, and Ms. Qidi Wu, Vice Minister of MOE (China) welcomed the conference attendees.

The morning session was hosted by Prof. Quyuan Ye, Vice President of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Following the theme of this conference--Globally Sharing Open Educational Content--Dr. Marshall Smith, from the Hewlett Foundation and Prof. Ruimin Shen from ShanghaiJiaotongUniversity stated their ideas respectively.
Then the pioneers of OCW from MIT, Dr. Dick Yue, Ms. Anne Margulies, Dr. Hal Abelson, and Dr. Victor Zue provided more examples to share the concept of MITOCW and also introduced the new iCampus project. After a short break, the afternoon session started from 1:30pm, with Ms. Anne Margulies hosting this session. The first part of this session was about CORE and application of OCW in China.Dr. Fun-Den Wang and Dr. Derrick Take introduced CORE¡¯s program and the application of OCW in China. Prof. Hong Zhu from DalianUniversity of Technology shared how her university plans to use OCW, and Mr. Sean Gilbert and students from MIT introduced their own experience in using OCW to teach at QinghaiUniversity this summer. In the second part of the session, representatives from other American universities, such as Dr.Vivian Sinou from Foothills Community College, Dr. James Yager and Dr. Sukon Kanchanaraksa from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and Dr. Geneva Henry from Rice University introduced how they understand OCW and its application in their universities. Prof. Chunyan Wang, RenminUniversity also presented the topic of intellectual property.
 

¡¡¡¡At 6:00pm, an evening banquet was held on the second floor of the TianPingHotel in Shanghai. All of the meeting participants both foreign and domestic attended the banquet. At 8:00pm, Dr. Fun-Den Wang, Chairman of IET Educational Foundation opened the Pioneer Award ceremony to recognize those people who have contributed greatly to the open sharing of educational resources. The winners are Dr. Charles M. Vest, former President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); Dr. Dick Yue, Associate Dean of the School of Engineering of MIT; . Ms. Anne Margulies, Director of MITOCW; Dr. Marshall Smith and Dr. Cathy Casserly, from the Hewlett Foundation; Mr. Yaoxue Zhang,Head of the Division of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education; Mr. Bing Yan, Vice President of the University of Central Radio and TV. The Pioneer Award is a sister award to the ¡°University Presidential Award¡± given by IET Educational Foundation in April 2004, which was awarded to three presidents from Beijing University, Beihang University, and Dalian University of Technology. The purpose of these two awards is to encourage more people to contribute their work to Chinese education and to recognize people who have done an excellent job in the field of open sharing of educational resources

 
¡¡¡¡ Dr. Cathy Casserly hosted the morning session on Sept.3. The topic was about the international cooperation of OCW. Representatives Anil Srivastava from AcrossWorld Communications, Dr. Stewart Cheifet from the Internet Archive, Dr. Xia Teng and Dr. Daniel Greenstein from the University of California Berkeley, and Dr. Candace Thille from Carnegie Mellon University gave speeches.

The afternoon discussion was hosted by Dr. Fun-Den Wang. Discussion sessions were held concerning OCW¡¯s resources, its application, and international collaboration. After the discussion, Dr. Wang announced that the 2005 MIT & CORE OCW Conference would be held at Xi¡¯an Jiaotong University, and that he also hoped that everyone would actively participate in globally open sharing and contribute greatly to education in the following days. Then 2004 MIT & CORE OCW Conference ended.

¡¡¡¡ All the activities and details, such as the presentations and the award ceremony during the conference, went very well.All of the guests from abroad and China thought highly of the conference.

¡¡¡¡With support from Chinese government, other organizations, and the association of its member universities, CORE¡¯s work has been done systematically. The mission of CORE is to elevate the general level of higher education in China and contribute to the establishment of high quality universities. For the mission, all of the CORE stuff will spare no effort to work for the public welfare and help to establish more high quality universities in China.
