At 5:00pm on Aug.22, 2004, the 15th International Meeting of University Administrators started in the Yangguang Meeting Room of the Yingjie Exchange Center at Beijing University. More than 200 Presidents, Chiefs of Teaching Affairs Offices, and Scholars of Advanced Educational Administration Theory from 33 countries met to discuss the theme.Taking Opportunities and Managing Risks.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Fun-Den Wang, Chairman of CORE (China Open Resource for Education) gave a short speech. Dr. Wang welcomed the guests to Beijing on behalf of CORE and IET Educational Foundation. He introduced the work of IET Educational Foundation and CORE in China over the past 10 years and motivated the audience to address important educational questions during their time at the conference.
As mentioned, the main theme of this meeting isManagerial Capacity Building in Universities: Taking Opportunities and Managing Risks. Workshops and presentations were given on four sub-themes: Promoting Institutional and Organizational Effectiveness, Risk Management and Entrepreneurship in Higher Education, Maximizing Staff Performance: Issues in Staff Development and Human Resource management, and Promoting Change and Academic Innovation. As part of the conference several workshops were commissioned by the conference organizers.
Dr. Wang and Dr. Derrick Tate presented a commissioned workshop on the topic of Open Courseware Impact on Global Education on August 24. They presented the motivation for sharing knowledge globally and invited the participants to share a common vision about the benefits of open sharing. The talk included a historical introduction to CORE's work, its mission, objectives, programs, strategy, and the relationship to educational excellence. |
