| On November 5 Dr. Derrick Tate visited Yanshan University to discuss China Open Resources for Education (CORE) with administrators and faculty of the School of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Tate was introduced to Dean Zhang Qing, Dean Zhao Yongsheng, and Prof. Kong Xiangdong, by Dr. Joseph Clumpner, a fellow alum of MIT who has taught at Yanshan University the past five years with his wife Karin.
In the morning, Dr. Tate had the opportunity for an informal discussion with staff and students from the School of Mechanical Engineering on the topics of Yanda, CORE, IETEF, and research in mechanical engineering. The administrators and faculty asked many good questions and were very interested the use of CORE’s open courseware to improve teaching. Afterwards, Dr. Tate received a tour of the campus including a visit to the Twenty-first Century Building that provided a bird’s-eye view of the campus, Yanda’s new campus under construction, and the nearby coast. In the afternoon, Dr. Tate gave a presentation on “Open Sharing of Educational Resources” to the staff and graduate students of the Mechanical Engineering School. Dr. Tate presented the motivation for open sharing, an overview of his personal experience studying at MIT and using OCW for teaching in China, the implementation and use of MIT OCW, and a detailed description of CORE including its objectives, programs, member universities, and benefits.
During his visit Dr. Tate had the opportunity to meet other personnel from Yanda, including Vice President Yang Yulin, Director of the International Cooperation Division Han Decai, Vice President Wang Yongchang.
