CORE Staff Members visit MIT OCW
2005-01-03

Boston welcomed a snowy day on January 3, 2005. MIT showed its great attractiveness under the cover of the white snow. During their travel to America at the beginning of 2005, Dr. Derrick Tate and Gladys Guo visited the MIT OCW Office, where they had a good talk with Ms. Ann Margulies, the Executive Director of MIT OCW, Farnaz Haghseta, External Outreach Liaison and Steve Carson, Evaluation Specialist. Ms. Margulies gave an introduction of the progress that MIT OCW has made in publishing more than 900 courses, their plan to promote OCW in Africa along with a meeting to be held in the summer of 2005 in Africa, and the challenges faced by MIT OCW. She also inquired about CORE’s work and stated the hope that CORE could serve as a model for other regions in the world that will use MIT OCW. Farnaz has a new position in MIT OCW as External Outreach Liaison for coordinating international relationships. Later, Steve introduced the evaluation data collected from users of the MIT OCW website. During the visit, Derrick and Gladys exchanged a hard disk drive with MIT to receive the latest, updated 900 courses from MIT OCW for CORE’s website. In the afternoon, Derrick and Gladys also visited Dr. Phillip Long, who is responsible for MIT’s iCampus program. Phil explained the details of each program in iCampus, and Derrick introduced CORE’s expectation of iCampus in Chinese universities. Then they specifically analyzed how each program would apply in Chinese universities. Before Derrick and Gladys left MIT, Phil also gave them a tour of a physics classroom with a state-of-the-art learning environment for MIT’s freshmen.
This visit helped CORE staff to have a direct touch of MIT OCW and also paved the way for iCampus’ arrival into Chinese universities. We wish the cooperation between CORE and MIT OCW will be the same pretty as Boston under the white snow!
