2005-03-29

On March 29, 2005, Mr. Jon Paul Potts (Director of MIT OCW), Professor Liu Dianqiu (Senior Advisor to CORE), and Mr. Jordan Wang (CORE Translator) arrived in Hangzhou, China. The purpose of their trip was to hold a second seminar about CORE and MIT OCW (Open CourseWare) at Zhejiang University.

The next day, Mr. Potts gave a presentation about MIT OCW to leaders and professors from Zhejiang University. Before Mr. Potts’ presentation, Mr. Yan Qiamao, Vice Dean of Teaching Affairs, gave a warm welcome speech and briefly introduced Zhejiang University. He stated that Zhejiang University desires to be a first-class university in the world and is currently working towards this goal. Mr. Pan Yunhe, President of Zhejiang University, emphasized that a key means for reaching this goal is to learn from existing first-class universities such as MIT and their OCW. The Chinese Ministry of Education has made great efforts in promoting distance education, and Zhejiang University is one of the government’s trial universities. They also established a special award for distance education. As a CORE Lead University, Zhejiang University will strive to carry out the OCW educational experience and has pledged to help spread the use of OCW to universities in other provinces in China. After Mr. Potts’ presentation about MIT OCW’s meaning, vision, implementation, and outcomes, professors from Zhejiang University asked many valuable questions, especially those who had been participating in the translation and application of MIT OCW. They also gave many practical suggestions for the future development of MIT OCW.

After Mr. Potts’ presentation and question-and-answer session, Professor Liu Dianqiu presented details about CORE’s background, programs, memberships, Lead University roles, and CORE’s cooperative relationship with MIT OCW. At the same time, he expressed his expectation for Zhejiang University to take the lead among CORE’s Lead Universities and to help spread the use of MIT OCW. He also hoped that Zhejiang University would share its excellent course materials with the world in the future.
