On the afternoon of April 4, Mr. Jon Paul Potts (Director of Communications of MIT OCW) and Dr. Meifeng Liu (Translation Coordinator of CORE) visited Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, which was the first promotion for MIT OCW and CORE in Hong Kong. K. Yam (Chairman of the Hong Kong Association for Educational Communications and Technology) attended the meeting.

The meeting was done in a discussion format. Since it was the first time to present MIT OCW and CORE in Hong Kong, Mr. Jon Paul Potts started the discussion with the Hong Kong colleagues by giving an introduction of what MIT OCW is, the reasons to do OCW, and its impact on MIT?.s self-development. Then he further explained the use of MIT OCW and its effect and the development of the Open Sharing Movement in the whole world. Dr. Meifeng Liu also exchanged opinions with the Hong Kong colleagues about the meaning and background of CORE, which was born under the movement of open sharing of knowledge in the whole world, CORE?.s vision and goals, CORE?.s present programs, and CORE?.s strategies. She emphasized CORE?.s Lead University program and the benefits and obligations of CORE?.s Lead Universities and member universities. She also expressed CORE?.s concept to help to promote the quality of Chinese education. Namely, building a consortium between excellent Chinese universities and first-class universities in the world promotes the development of first-class universities in China. As the same time, providing various excellent educational materials free for open sharing speeds the development of all universities in China.

All the Hong Kong colleagues said that they knew and understood more about MIT OCW and CORE through the discussion. They also identified MIT OCW and CORE?.s great contribution to the movement of open sharing of knowledge. The Hong Kong colleagues introduced their efforts to put the course materials taught by teachers from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on the Internet. They said they also would like to share the interface they are using now with universities from mainland China.

Mr. Potts further emphasized the importance of CORE as the only contact point with MIT OCW in China. He and Dr. Meifeng Liu also discussed the possibility to develop CORE?.s Lead University program and member universities in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong colleagues. They all quietly identified with the possibility and pointed out that the key for the next step was how to proceed.

Both sides agreed that Mr. Jon Paul and Dr. Meifeng Liu ?.s visit to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology would play a introductory role for meeting and further discussion between the Chairman of CORE and the President of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. This was an efficient meeting, and both sides were very satisfied with the result of the meeting.
Mr. Jon Paul Potts' Hong Kong trip ended his 10-day visit to Chinese universities, especially CORE's Lead Universities. This was his first trip to China this year. He kept praising the warm-heartedness and hospitality of Chinese people. He expressed his deep thanks to CORE for its support for his whole trip. He was also impressed deeply by the hard work of CORE staff. Through the visit and promotion with CORE representatives, Mr. Potts also further understood CORE?.s working style and concept and its current programs. We believe that the future cooperation between MIT OCW and CORE will be closer and more charming.
