Chairman Fun-Den Wang emphasized CORE¡¯s mission of enhancing education quality and providing more opportunities for knowledge-seekers in China. He made a presentation on CORE¡¯s accomplishments since the last Board Meeting at the end of 2004. To advance sustainability of Open Education, CORE has assembled quality courses and published CQOCW on its website. For CORE, the major task is to introduce, translate and use the first-class courses in the world into Chinese universities so as to benefit more knowledge-seekers. CORE is also making quality courses in China shared globally. CORE is absorbing more members with the help of universities, educational institutions and even some individuals in China. CORE has made outstanding progress with the support of all.
The project of ten CORE Lead Universities has been proven to be a very successful one. CORE¡¯s model depends upon close cooperation with the universities in China. CORE¡¯s efforts have brought MIT OCW the largest group of users in the world. CORE OCW can be linked to 1,600 education websites all over China. Till now, 451 CNQOCW have been linked to CORE¡¯s website. CORE has successfully held two international conferences, and created a new OCW model. The current visit count of CORE¡¯s website is over 7000 per day. Necessary preparations are being done to set up MIT OCW mirror sites for increasing CORE Lead Universities and Member Universities. ChairmanWang also introduced the operating mode of CORE OCW. As a new-born non-profit education organization, CORE is doing its utmost to provide the member universities more opportunities to communicate with the world. CORE is also making efforts towards providing all the knowledge-seekers an international platform to share quality resources in the world. What CORE is going to do next is to exhibit Chinese Quality courses globally. Board members of CORE also discussed issues on promoting international communication and cooperation between universities in China and abroad. The entire board talked passionately, affirming CORE¡¯s efforts and provided many instructive suggestions.
The second part of the board meeting is about the 2nd ¡°Distinguished University Presidents Award¡±, which will be funded by IET Foundation and Peking University Founder Group. Mr. Xin Wei, board chairman of the Founder Group, highly appreciated ChairmanWang for his contributions to education in China. Mr. Xin Wei expressed Founder Group¡¯s determination to support Open Education in China. He said it was part of the tenet of the Founder Group to serve education. He also expressed his hope of absorbing more and more enterprises, organizations and social groups to support education, which would benefit future generations.
Then Chairman Wang discussed with the board members the new method of issuing the 2005-2006 IET Education Foundation scholarship to the universities. Considering its transparency, the award will be published on the website. IET Education Foundation will support CORE as always. ChairmanWang also stated the cooperation project between IET Education Foundation and the Beijing Government and its vision.
At last, Chairman Wang talked about China-Us Relation Conference, which is scheduled on 14 to 17 in November in Beijing. He emphasized that CORE will hold a panel on open education during the conference. ChairmanWang will himself host the panel which he believes is important and beneficial to CORE.
Weifang Min, president of Peking University, gave a detailed introduction to the content and background of the conference. He mentioned that the conference was an important non-official international conference. The 1st China-Us Relation Conference was held in 2003 to commemorate the President Nixon¡¯s visit to China 30 years ago. Important members of the two governments and experts, including Chairman Wang will be invited to give lectures in different fields. The conference will definitely promote the development of many aspects of culture and education in both China and US.
The panel to be undertaken by CORE is about Open Education in China. It will benefit all attendees and the invitation letters will be sent out in a few days.
The board meeting turned out to be successful and efficient. All board members promised to coordinate their activities with Chairman Wang¡¯s work to support CORE. |
