International universities gathering in Golden, Colorado to discuss sharing educational resources and collaboration |

GOLDEN, Colo., May 1, 2006-- Participants from Peking University, Colorado School of Mines (CSM), National Institute of Multimedia Education of Japan, China Open Resource for Education and the Western Cooperative for Educational Telecommunications met in Golden to discuss collaboration and the sharing of educational resources to improve the overall quality of education. The participants explored ways in which they can expand their collaboration and sharing of course content.
After visiting Yale, Harvard, MIT, Columbia and NYU on the East Coast, President Shimizu of the National Institute of Multimedia Education (NIME), Dr. Min of Peking University and Professor Yuan and Ms. Aoki, also from NIME, came to Golden to participate in the meetings and will go on to California to meet with Stanford and U.C. Berkeley.
Also, participating in the meetings are Dr. Fun-Den Wang, founder of China Open Resource for Education (CORE) and the IET Foundation and a Professor Emeritus of CSM, and Dr. John Trefny, President of CSM, who is collaborating with CORE as well as MIT to expand the use of Open Course Ware.
Dr. Min and Dr. Trefny are working closely with the IET Foundation/COREand Dr. Wang to develop an innovative new higher education organization to address the challenges of the 21st century.
The meetings included in-depth discussions regarding collaboration between CORE and NIME to support each other¡¯s programs. Also, CORE formalized its relationship with WCET, represented by Dr. Sally Johnstone, to facilitate the exchange of programs and collaboration on a wide range of educational activities.
CSM is a world-renowned university specializing in energy, minerals, materials and environmental education and research.
Peking University is the premier university in China and is wellknown worldwide. Dr. Min Weifan is the Executive Vice President and Chairman of the university and currently a visiting researcher at NIME.
CORE consists of over 100 university members with over 5 million students and is funded by the Hewlett Foundation and the IET Foundation. It utilizes Open Course Ware from MIT and other universities to enhance the quality of education in China and to share Chinese courseware worldwide. Dr. Wang founded CORE and the IET Foundation and serves on the Peking University Foundation Board of Directors and is assisted by Mr. Chet Wrzesinski, Vice President of the IET Foundation.
NIME is an independent administrative institution in Japan that contributes to the advancement of higher education by conducting research and development into educational methodologies and contents for advanced media. Dr. Shimizu is the President of NIME.
WCET is a premier organization that includes 250 higher education members from 46 states and 8 countries that is addressing the effective use of telecommunications in learning. Dr. Sally Johnstone is the Executive Director of WCET. |
