International Conference of Open Education was held on April 20-21£¬2006 at Kyoto University in Japan. Participants are from China, Japan, the United States, Spain, France, Britain, Thailand£¬Vietnam and other countries. And nearly 200 delegates attended the meeting. Professor Huang Meiqi, chairman assistant of China Open Resources for Education (CORE), Professor Zhang Zimao, Provost of Beijing Jiaotong University, Professor Qiu Jie, Deputy Director of Xi'an Jiaotong University and Professor Zhu Hong, Deputy Director of Dalian University of Technology participated in this meeting.

This meeting was jointly organized by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of Kyoto. Professor Kazuo OIKE, President of Kyoto University, attended the conference and delivered the opening address. Anne Margulies, MIT OCW Executive Director made a speech on the OCW project: his ideas about OCW, its recent developments, the impact for global education and the future prospects.

At the meeting experts and scholars from different countries exchanged their experiences in application of open courses. They discussed actively on the problems of sustainable development and construction of open education, which we are facing at present and in the further.

On behalf of CORE¡¯s Chairman, Professor Huang Meiqi made a report from CORE. She elaborated that in order to promote the development of higher education in China and around the world, China Open Resources for Education (CORE) have been constructing its open resources and sustainable development ideas in recent years.

She emphasized eight tasks of CORE at present in her speech:

1. To encourage and promote the world¡¯s top-ranked education resources used more widely by learners from universities, institutes and continuing education.

2. To translate high quality learning resources into Chinese.

3. To translate Chinese high quality learning resources into English.

4. To display the high quality learning resources on the website and to add more video learning resources on CORE¡¯s website in China

5. To organize international conferences and seminars on advanced teaching techniques and methods so as to improve communication and cooperation in the education industry.

6. To support the comparative studies of teaching materials, teaching and teaching methods among universities and colleges at home and abroad; to stimulate the enthusiasm and creation of teachers and explore high level learning methods.

7. To develop more teaching researches among teachers and students to enable them keep pace with the renewing courseware. To build a teaching center composing by institutes and experts. To provide labs and funds for universities and colleges. To build a solid support from users by providing high quality services.

8. To create a sustainable education system.

CORE is paving a new way of education. It gets more and more understanding and supporting from home and abroad. And its clicks ratio of the website is increasing. She expressed that she was confident about the future of CORE.

The accomplishments of CORE were appreciated by all the participants. It is CORE who organized most of Chinese universities join in the global OCW movement. Its number of members, applications, and the quality of translation and researches are outstanding. Its long-term goals and specific working plan would contribute more to the global OCW movement in the near future.
