Summary of CORE Board Meeting

Board Meeting of China Open Resources for Education (CORE) was held in Beijing Continental Grand Hotel at 7 o¡¯clock in the evening. Participants included: Prof. Fun-Den Wang, Chairman of CORE, Prof. Shen Shituan, Co-Chairman of CORE, Prof. Yang Tianjun, Co-Chairman Of CORE, Prof. Liu Dianqiu, Senior Consultant of CORE, Prof. Huang Meiqi, Chairman Assistant of CORE, Prof. Chen Zhunmin, President of University of International Business and Economics, Prof. Chen Qiyuan, President of Central South University, Prof. Li Wei, President of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Prof. Min Weifang, Chairman of the University Council at Peking University, Prof. Tan Zhenhui, President of Beijing Jiaotong University, Prof. Yan Bing, President of China Central Radio and TV University, Prof. Zhong Binglin, President of Beijing Normal University, Prof. Ji Baocheng, President of Renmin University, Prof. Wu Ganguo, President of China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Prof. Zhao Pengda, President of China University of Geosciences and academician, Dr. Kai-Fu Lee, Vice President of Google, Engineering and President of Google China, Dr. Carter Tseng, CEO of Little Dragon Foundation, Mr. Wei Xin, Chairman of Founder Group, and the representative of Higher Education Press. In this meeting, Prof. Fun-Den Wang gave a brief introduction about CORE¡¯s recent work and its future work emphases. And members of the Board discussed these issues.

To start, Prof. Fun-Den Wang gave a general view of CORE¡¯s recent achievements, international cooperation, and its confronting challenges and development sustainability. He hoped every member of the Board could give more support to CORE. In addition, Prof. Wang shared his idea of building a world university in China and its present development with every member.

Later, Prof. Liu Dianqiu introduced the application of OCW in CORE¡¯s Lead Universities: There are 134 MITOCW courses have been translated into Chinese version and published (with another 316 MITOCW courses have been translating by volunteers) on CORE¡¯s website. To date, there are 245 MITOCW courses being adapted, adopted or absorbed in teaching, 190 professors and above 6,000 students have participated in the use of MITOCW in teaching and studying. 12 CQOCW from 7 universities will have been translated or edited into English by the end of September 2006. And the second project of translating CQOCW into English has been launching. Besides, Prof. Liu talked about the projects of CORE¡¯s Open Education Scholarship and the ceremony of the Third Open Education Conference which would be held in Xi¡¯an on September 6 - 7, 2006.

Prof. Huang Meiqi described the situation of staff expanding and the initiative of"Three-membership" (includes teacher Member, student member and voltmeter member) in CORE. She talked about inviting cooperators from the member universities to CORE.

Prof. Chen Zhunmin recommended the sophisticated teachers in University of International Business and Economics to join in the work of CORE, which was highly appreciated by Prof. Fun-Den Wang. He hoped more people would join in the career of Open Education. He said that it was a way to bridge the gap between CORE and the member universities.
During the discussion, Dr. Kai-Fu Lee showed great interests in the work of MITOCW translation in CORE. He wondered if our government could collect some funds to support Open Education in China. Prof. Wang mentioned his experiences of introducing Open Education in India and Vietnam. Open education in both countries is sponsored by their governments.

Later, Prof. Min Weifang shared the idea of building a world university. He explained, ¡°In nowadays China, as long as there is a university, there would be a bright outlook. Thereby, to establish a university nearby could exert its regional potential. That it is education foster talents; talents bring investments; investments indicate regional development, and vice versa. Such a good circulation could be beneficial to the whole society. So, we shall cast an eye to the long distance that building a world university is a project in favor to our country, people and education.¡± Mr. Wei Xin agreed with his point on this project. One referred to the related state regulation that to build such a great project three or four alternates are needed for the comparative analysis.

In conclusion, Prof. Fun-Den Wang thanked the participance of every board of trustees and welcomed any suggestion in the future course of Open Education.
