"Open Content" at Codata Conference
2006-10-23
On Oct 23, a session about "open content" at the Codata conference "Scientific Data and Knowledge within the Information Society" was held on the 18th floor of Huarun Hotel in the east of Beijing. The session was organized by the "Open Culture" Committee and co-chaired by Dr. Paolo Pumilia, coordinator of Open Culture International Association and Prof. Dianqiu Liu, senior adviser of CORE.

On behalf of Hewlett Foundation, Dr. Fun-Den Wang, the chairman of CORE, gave a presentation on Global Movement on Open Education Resources at the session. Mr. Jordan Wang, staff worker from CORE, gave a presentation on Advance Open Education in China. Prof. Meichi Huang also attended the meeting. Other speakers, mainly from Europe, presented topics on open content in learning, open access for libraries and journals and the future of open access.

Even though the session was delayed by some technical problems, the enthusiasm of the speakers and audience was not quenched by the frustration. This was the first time that Codata conference incorporated a session on open content. Originally, the chairs were concerned that there might not be enough audience for this session. However, it turned out that the session was far more attractive than expected. Seats were not enough and people were standing in the aisles during the session.
